Updated environmental standard for management systems<\/h2>\n

The revised version of ISO 14001 has now been published and replaces ISO 14001:2015. The update has been carried out with a focus on clarifying existing requirements and ensuring that the standard continues to reflect current environmental and sustainability issues.<\/p>\n

The changes include, among other things, clearer guidance regarding climate impact, biodiversity, lifecycle perspective, and change management. The updated standard also emphasises the link between environmental performance and business benefits, as well as the importance of structured analysis and follow-up. The structure has been harmonised with other ISO standards, which facilitates organisations with integrated management systems. For operations already certified according to ISO 14001, the impact will be limited. Most existing environmental management systems already meet the updated requirements in practice, and we see no need to carry out GAP analyses or specific training due to the new version.<\/p>\n

What happens now?<\/h2>\n

SIS is currently working on the Swedish translation of the standard, which is expected to be completed in May\/June. Thereafter, Swedac needs to enable us to apply for accreditation for the new version. We will apply for accreditation as soon as possible, and only then will we know if your audit time will be affected. We recommend that you transition to the updated standard in 2027 or 2028, coinciding with your ordinary annual audit. The transition period is 3 years, meaning certified organisations must have upgraded to the new standard by 15 April 2029.<\/p>\n

Please note that no new certifications to ISO 14001:2015 will be permitted after 15 October 2027.<\/p>
